The Internet has become an increasingly essential part of our society. It is now such an important part of our financial and social experience that those who do not have regular access to it can be both financially and socially disadvantaged. The project would aim to reconnect those who have become increasingly distant from the day to day social and economic benefits of the Internet. The project will primarily assist those who are elderly, disabled and disadvantaged to have full, supported, access to the Internet. This would be achieved by supplying the most ‘easy to use’ computer currently available, complete with a support structure. The user will not own the device unless they wish to purchase it.
The ease of use of the computer is critical to the scheme, as is a support structure. For those of us who have been brought up with the computer it has largely become second nature. But for many the idea of operating a computer is like the idea of operating a spaceship, scary. Some can see it as too modern and just not of their era. To others its just a matter of cost. Even those who learn to use a computer in later life can struggle if left solely alone with it, frequently abandoning it to collect dust. Yet for many of our target section of our society, if the computer were simple and straightforward enough to use, many of its uses would become very appealing. If there was support, informative education and help they would at least have the informed choice to join the rest of us. More details in the ‘hardware’ section.
